The calculation

4 fl oz × 29.57 = 118 g of water × 0.86 = 102 g full · × 90% = 92 g

Candle wax weighs about 0.86 times as much as the same volume of water (fill-weight rule). The fragrance oil is part of that fill, so the wax is the fill weight divided by (1 + fragrance load). Your jar may hold slightly more or less than its label — fill it with water and weigh it for an exact figure.

FAQ

4 oz candle — questions

A jar that holds 4 fl oz (118 ml) of water takes about 102 g (3.6 oz) of wax filled to the brim, because wax is about 0.86 times as heavy as water. Filled to 90%, that is 92 g of wax and fragrance together.

At 8% of the wax weight, about 6.8 g (0.24 oz) of fragrance oil with 85 g of wax; at 10%, 8.3 g. Stay within your wax’s maximum load.

Usually not. Jars are sold by their fluid-ounce capacity; because wax is lighter than water, a 4 fl oz jar holds about 3.6 oz of wax by weight when full. Some sellers label candles by net wax weight instead — check which one you mean.
