Wax Melt Calculator

Wax and fragrance oil for clamshells and wax-melt moulds: cavity weight × count, your fragrance load and a batch total in grams and ounces.

Your melts

Weigh one filled clamshell or mould (or fill it with water, weigh the water and multiply by 0.86).

The formula

Total fill = fill weight × number of clamshells × (1 + extra %)
Wax = total fill ÷ (1 + load) · Fragrance oil = wax × load

Wax melts have no wick, so they are usually made with more fragrance than candles. CandleScience’s clamshell wax-melt guide uses 9% fragrance (1.5 oz per pound of wax) in CocoSol, a wax rated for up to 25%. Other melt waxes are rated lower — check your wax’s published maximum.

Waxes used for melts

Melts need a wax firm enough to release from the mould and hold its shape in the clamshell: paraffin blends, soy and coconut blends made for melts or pillars, or blends like CocoSol. Very soft container waxes can stick or sweat.

Tips for consistent melts

  1. Weigh one finished clamshell rather than relying on the listed capacity — fill levels vary.
  2. Mix fragrance at the temperature your wax supplier recommends and stir for two minutes.
  3. Let the melts rest before testing — at least a day, longer for soy blends.
  4. Label correctly. If you sell melts, fragrance oils come with safety data and label requirements; follow your supplier’s documents.

FAQ

Wax Melts — questions

Wax melts are usually made at a higher fragrance load than candles, because there is no wick to burn. CandleScience’s clamshell guide uses 9% (1.5 oz per lb) in CocoSol, a wax rated for up to 25%. Stay within your wax’s maximum and the fragrance supplier’s safety limits.

It varies by mould — commonly 2.5 to 3.5 oz (70–100 g) for a six-cavity clamshell. Fill one with water and weigh it, then multiply by 0.86 for the wax weight, or weigh a finished melt.

Harder waxes that release cleanly from moulds: paraffin blends, soy melt or pillar blends, or coconut blends made for melts. Container soy waxes are too soft for many clamshells.

Most makers let melts rest for 24–48 hours, and soy blends often for longer, before testing scent throw. Follow your wax supplier’s advice.
