Knitting & Crochet Gauge Calculator

Work out your gauge from a swatch, how many stitches to cast on for a width, and how to resize a pattern when your gauge doesn’t match — for knitting and crochet.

Your swatch

Count stitches and rows over a measured width and height in the middle of a washed, blocked swatch.

Resize a pattern (optional)

Gauge formulas

Stitches per inch (or cm) = stitches counted ÷ width measured
Cast-on = finished width × stitches per inch, rounded to the stitch repeat
Resized count = pattern stitches × your gauge ÷ pattern gauge

Patterns usually give gauge over 4 inches (10 cm). Twenty stitches over 4 inches is 5 stitches per inch, so a 40-inch-wide piece needs 200 stitches. If the stitch pattern works over a multiple — say a multiple of 4 plus 2 — the calculator rounds to the nearest count that fits.

How to measure a swatch properly

  1. Make it big — at least 6 × 6 in (15 × 15 cm) — in the stitch pattern the project uses.
  2. Wash and block it the way you will treat the finished piece. Many yarns grow or shrink.
  3. Measure in the middle, away from the edges, over 4 in (10 cm). Count half stitches too.
  4. Too many stitches? Your fabric is tighter than the pattern — go up a needle or hook size. Too few? Go down.

Planning a blanket or scarf? Once you have a swatch, the yarn calculator estimates how much yarn you need from its weight.

FAQ

Gauge — questions

Knit or crochet a swatch at least 6 inches (15 cm) square in the pattern stitch, wash and block it as you will the finished piece, then count the stitches and rows across 4 inches (10 cm) in the middle.

Multiply the width you want by your stitches per inch (or per cm). At 20 stitches per 4 inches (5 per inch), a 40-inch-wide blanket needs 200 stitches — then round to suit the stitch pattern’s repeat.

Change needle or hook size first — a larger size gives fewer stitches per inch. If you keep your own gauge, rescale stitch counts: new stitches = pattern stitches × your gauge ÷ pattern gauge.

The Craft Yarn Council’s system puts medium (#4, worsted and aran) yarn at 16–20 knit stitches per 4 inches on 4.5–5.5 mm (US 7–9) needles.
