The calculation
Candle wax weighs about 0.86 times as much as the same volume of water (fill-weight rule). The fragrance oil is part of that fill, so the wax is the fill weight divided by (1 + fragrance load). Your jar may hold slightly more or less than its label — fill it with water and weigh it for an exact figure.
By fragrance load
| Fragrance load | Wax | Fragrance oil |
|---|---|---|
| 6% of wax | 173 g (6.09 oz) | 10.4 g (0.37 oz) |
| 8% of wax | 170 g (5.98 oz) | 13.6 g (0.48 oz) |
| 10% of wax | 166 g (5.87 oz) | 16.6 g (0.59 oz) |
For a batch (8% fragrance)
| Candles | Wax | Fragrance oil |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 1,017 g (2.24 lb) | 81 g (2.9 oz) |
| 12 | 2,035 g (4.49 lb) | 163 g (5.7 oz) |
| 24 | 4,069 g (8.97 lb) | 326 g (11.5 oz) |
Check the maximum fragrance load for your wax — commonly 10% for container soy waxes and up to 12–15% for some blends (see the candle calculator table).
